Hosts with the most for World Cup’s last eight

quarter finalists32 teams arrived in Brazil for the World Cup and only eight now remain for the quarter finals.

As well as bragging rights for the shirt suppliers, there are also bragging rights for the hosts of the teams’ training camps. The state of São Paulo has hosted four of the quarter final teams; State of Rio de Janeiro, two; and one each for Minas Gerais and Bahia.

A typically Brazilian good luck charm

00120-copyFIFA has launched its own version of one of Brazil’s most traditional good luck charms,the fitinha.

From the state of Bahia a fitinha is a simple, blessed ribbon which is tied around the wrist (or ankle) in three knots. Each knot represents a wish. The luck comes when the ribbon rots through and falls off. The ribbons, often stamped with “Lembrança do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia“, come in many colours and each colour has a meaning and represents a certain orixá or deity. Light blue for Iemanja, the Goddess of the Sea, for example.
