208 countries entered for the 2018 World Cup, but there was only space for just 32 teams in Russia. To qualify a total of 871 games were played between 12 March 2015 and 15 November 2017 with 2,469 goals being scored.
In the 20 previous World Cup Finals there have only been eight champions and they are: Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002); Italy (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006); Germany (1954, 1974,1990, 2014); Argentina (1978, 1986); Uruguay (1930, 1950); England (1966); France (1998) and Spain (2010). All eight champions played in Brazil in 2014, but only seven were in Russia in 2018. Four time winner, Italy, being the odd man out.
